How Self Adhesive Labels Work The Science Behind the Stick
A self adhesive label also called a pressure-sensitive label (PSL) is a tri-layer system. Understanding this structure helps you choose the right label for your application.
Layer 1 – Face Stock
The printable front surface. Can be paper (coated or uncoated), BOPP film, PET film or specialty foil. This layer carries your artwork, product information and regulatory text.
Layer 2 – Adhesive Coating
A pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) bonded to the back of the face stock. Activated by light finger or machine pressure no heat or water required. Adhesive type determines bond strength, removability and temperature resistance.
Layer 3 – Release Liner
A silicone-coated backing (glassine, PE or PET) that protects the adhesive during storage and transport. The liner peels away cleanly during application manually or via automated labelling machines.
